VALENTINE´S DAY
"Hay amor en el aire", hoy celebramos el tan esperado día de San valentín, un día en que las parejas reafirman el amor que sienten el uno del otro. En el año 270 D.C. Claudio II, Emperador de Roma, prohibió contraer matrimonio. Emitió este decreto porque estaba convencido de que los hombres casados eran malos soldados ya que, en caso de guerra no querían separarse de sus familias.
Valentín fue obispo durante este período de opresión. Él pensó que los decretos de Roma eran indignos y estaba convencido de que el pueblo debía ser libre para amar a Dios y para contraer matrimonio, por lo que le pidió a las parejas jóvenes que fuesen a él. Estas lo hicieron, y Valentín los casó en secreto.
Apresaron a Valentín y lo llevaron ante el emperador. Éste vio que era un hombre de una gran convicción y voluntad superior a la del resto de los hombres. Claudio intentó persuadir a Valentín una y otra vez para que renunciase al Cristianismo y sirviese al imperio y a los dioses romanos. A cambio de ello, Claudio estaba dispuesto a perdonarle y convertirle en uno de sus aliados. Pero Valentín se aferró a su fe y no renunció a Cristo. Debido a ello, el emperador le sentenció a una ejecución en tres partes. Primero le pegarían una paliza, luego le apedrearían y, finalmente, le decapitarían.
Valentín murió el 14 de Febrero del año 270 D.C.
Mientras se hallaba en la cárcel, esperando que se ejecutase su sentencia, Valentín se enamoró de la hija ciega del carcelero, llamado Asterio. Durante el tiempo que permaneció encarcelado, se produjo un milagro, y ella recuperó la vista. Valentín le envió una nota de despedida, firmándola "de tu Valentín." Aún, hoy en día, este mensaje gue siendo el lema de las celebraciones del Día de San Valentín, el día de los enamorados.
